Things that come to mind when i think of The Colours digi pack

Wordle: digipack idea

Target audience

When we come back from our holiday we are going to get an audience to view our music video and help us see where we went wrong, where we went right and what type of audience they think our video will appeal to. I think that our music video will appeal to teenage girls and boys who are perhaps in a similar situation. The reason i think it'll appeal to teenagers is because teenagers have these issues with the other gender and tend to find them selves in complicated relationships as a process of learning, A lot of teenagers take relationships seriously and this is why i think our music video is something teenagers can relate to. I also think that as we are teenagers ourselves we influence the way they think and behave and i think being a film made by teenagers is more effective than it would have been if made by adults.

Update of what we are doing.....

Today we realised that we have almost finished our music video, We just need to add in more transitions. Our music video seems to be in time with the music and we have also edited the love interest and the lead singer singing certain lyrics as if they were speaking them they are in time with the music and look really good. Thursday we went out and filmed the lead singer (Chaise) passing out to add more sense to out plot of the music video, We also filmed an hand held point of view shot. Chaise held the camera and moved it around as fast as he could to make everything in sight look blurry this was to achieve a drunken effect as earlier on we see him making his way into then out of a pub. We are now just going through the music video and putting in things such as transitions and effects. I hope to include some screen grabs from out editing soon.

Purpose of music videos

Today i was flicking through music channels on TV. I watched a few music videos and noticed that there are actually so many different purposes of realising music videos.

There are ones promoting new films and wanting to reach out the the public who like the particular song so they see the film and example of a song promoting a film is Paramore Decode. This song has been composed especially for the film Twilight. The video includes scenes from this film to encourage the public to want to see the film or if they have seen this film it encourages them to maybe buy the bands single.

Here is the music video:

There are also music videos that promote musicians new singles such as scouting for girls 'This ain't a love song'. These music videos are either done in a documentry style or illustrate the lyrics of the song. The purpose of this music video is to "sell" the single as much as it can if people can see the song visually then they may like it even more.

Then there are also music videos and songs that are calibrations of two artists singing together to promote one another. One is usually trying to help promote a new artist. This is a great comparison to media as it is just like a cross convention as it is two people working together to make a positive.
Here is an example : B.O.B. has worked with Rivers Cumo in order to help them noticeable to the public.

More filming

On Friday we filmed a flash back dream scene. The idea came to us on the day as we had a whole week of snow and we thought that it is very rare and so we wanted to work around that and add in a scene involving snow. The best idea we came up with was this whole flash back dreaming idea. When we edit the scene i mentioned putting it in black and white because it separates fantasy with reality and also represents the past to preset day. The day after we filmed a scene where Lexy rips off all the notes that the lead singer had left around her room saying "tonight i let you go"/its over to make her aware their relationship is over however we also thought that perhapps this is in her head because she is angry that this has come to an end. Originally we were going to show him decorating the place with notes however James felt that this would be best. We took a few different shots rather than keeping it the same and now we only have one more scene to add in to our music video so we hope to meet the deadline.

Friday 3 December 2010

Changes made due to weather

Due to the weather conditions we haven't beeen able to film much. This whole week has been full of snow and so today we decided to make a list of all the things we could include in our music video to make up for loss time.
Here is the list:
Other scene ideas: From “loveless fools believe…..”
· (Tonight I let you go/it’s over) postick note
· Documentary (band cheering him up, show the other side of his life distraction from what is going on)?
· Fans wanting autographs
· Speed up editing of girls making a banner for the band?
· Press scence interview (flashing cameras smiling )
· As it has been snowing we thought we could create a Flash back in the snow and then make it look like the flashback had been rewinded before he wakes up to show he is waking up but waking up to reality of this present day.

Digi Pack research

After we have finished our music video we will be creating a digi pack for the songs cd itself. We will be making it look as professional as it should and also add creative ideas influenced by technology. I decided after looking at pictures of digi packs to look up some reseaurch online here is what i found:
"Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak[2] is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot"[3] rather than a full plastic tray".
I also found out that they are currently inventing friendly environment digi packs in order to help the environment and making use of recycled objects/material.

More Filming

Other idea .....

As a group we elaborated on an idea that we will post sticker notes on Lexys door (the ex love interest) saying "tonight i let you go" she thinks nothing of it and it like OK then..... However she then walks up stairs to find them plastered everywhere which makes her angry yet somewhat sad because as much as she is mad she is upset that things have come to an end and wants him back despite knowing he doesn't believe in relationships and that they can work. We have agreed that we will film this scene on Monday at James' house.

Random idea .....

Today I was watching a music video of the song burning up by a band called Twenty Twenty. Their music video was based on a documentary of them gigging and touring all over and had shots of them as band messing around, meeting fans and performing. I saw a clip of them coming out of their dressing room and thought that in order to add more shot into our project we could perhaps include a dressing room door with The Colours printed on paper on the door and perhaps see them come out of the room ready to "perform" to make them look more believable as performing artists maybe?. I also thought about maybe adding in fans wanting them to sign things and linking in the story line buy showing the other two band members happy to see their fans and the lead singer not bothered and down so we notice that this situation is affecting the way he acts because he is still guilty for what he has done. these are just random ideas that i thought of and may not appear in our piece.

Digi Pack

I have been thinking about my groups digi pack for our media coursework. I came across a picture from the band Paramores Brick by boring brick video. They had taken pictures of the shoot and put them into a grid style picture so there are two pictures either side. I thought that perhapps we could use this idea for our and use 4 snap shots from out music video to put on the digi pack so the audience when they see it can relate the video to the song also i think it is a very creative and different way as not manny cds use this idea on their digi packs.
Here is the picture:

Today in lesson ....

Today in our lesson we continued editing the footage we have of our music video . We also decided on what else we need to fill in the gapes in the time line as well as trying out a new scene. We had Liam writing Tonight I let you go in capitals on paper as this is a scene before he Wrights more and leaves them posted around his ex girlfriends bedroom or her front door. We had to crop the footage in order for it to look right however we are not so sure whether we should include the footage we have or retake better ones. I think we will have to redo the shots and make them better.

Monday 22 November 2010

When watching Homecoming by Hey Monday on youtube. I thought that the structure of their music video was the same as ours although the story-line may be a little different to ours the theme of moving on and letting go is the same. They have the band singing and a lead singer singing about her ex loved one who is around , and she states that she has let him go as-well as encouraging her friend to stay away. It isn't 100% exact to our video and has its differences a main one being that the lead singer of this song is a girl but the video still has similar ideas to ours.

pictures from park filming-Not great quality

Todays filming......

Today as a group we went to a local park to shoot one of our scenes . This scene was the scene that takes place the morning after the lead singers argument with hes girlfriend the day before. The singer wakes up in a park on a park bench where he had obviously crashed out during the night. He then looks around wondering where he is and then starts to walk and sees couples of all ages however he doesn't feel sad he just thinks that they are oblivious to reality and doesn't really take much notice. Today we took pictures which i will upload soon, we also spoke about and tried out new angles to help our music video have a wider variety of angles. Today we also came up with an idea of making some of our music video unillustrated to the lyrics but having out lyrics on card and people holding them up , we also when filming one of the couples on a bench had an idea of how we could get the lyrics to appear up on the screen on the shelter to make it look like the lyrics are on the background behind the couple.

Friday 19 November 2010

TOMORROW!

Tomorrow we are filming another scene for our music video. This scene can wither work and look effective or not. However we decided to take the risk because we could get something really cool out of it. We want to have couples following the lead singer and almost appearing as magic so its a thought of his imagination because relationships are playing on his mind so much hes going mad. I also really wanted to try this technique because it could look really effective. We are also planning to buy some paper cards and writing the lyrics on them and then having someone stand behind a couple with the lyrics on these card papers. as if to show the same situation and how common it is.

Today filming...

Today we had do redo a shot of Liam and James singing the adlib of "heartbreak" for the middle eight of our chosen song. we too the shots one at a time but both facing inwards so when we edit it it'll look like they are facing each other and singing to each other. We did try at first having then back to back but it didn't look as effective as the second time we tried it with them facing in.

Tuesday 16 November 2010

So far.....

So far we have filmed our beginning and band scenes. We have also edited the beginning adding in captions such as "get out!" at the bottom of the screen . when chaise says something the caption comes up on the right so we know chaise is speaking. After we added in the text we put the music on top . We managed to get it in time and so the beginning of our music video is ready. we are now adding the close up of Chaise singing to our time line so after the argument straight away we see Chaise sing. All we need to do now is film the other footage that is needed and add that in.

Monday 15 November 2010

Fridays filming ......

Last friday we re filmed the band scenes as we felt that we needed to redo parts to make them more believable and make the scene alot in time more than what it was. This time we also looked more at the mise en scene such as clothing. James and Liam had glasses on and James this time around wore a plain red shirt. Their image looked alot better than before. we also included a close up of Chaise's face while he was singing. we made him sing all the way through the song while having a close up on his face so we can cut in and out of it when we need to. Another scene we created was having the other band members sing along to the song and sing with the lead singer on lines such as "heartbreak" this eventually in the song becomes an ad lib and we wanted to show this effectively as you can hear in the music at this point in the song there are more than one voice that is heard and so we wanted to use that rather than having the lead singer by him self because it could look weird with all these voices and the lead singer singing something on top.

1st day of Filming

Our first day of filming was last week. We filmed the opening scene where the lead singer and his love interest argue. This argument straight away sets the story for the audience. The location for this was James' house. We shot the scene in two different angles for the effect of using a variety of angles rather than one but to also show every little detail we can. We then filmed a scene that comes later on in our music video where the love interest calls the lead singer and mimes the words "come back come back come back and hope for more" this is to show how the love interest thinks that the lead singer will come back to her and hope to make things right. This in a sense helps up explore the love interests character.

Health and safety assessment

1:No filming in inappropriate locations

2:Check safety of locations

3:Minimize risk of theft of equipment

4:When filming on location ensure teacher or responsible adult where you are going, when you will be back and leave them with a mobile number

5:Check all equipment is working before leaving

6:Ensure you have permission to film if necessary

7:Always film with at least one other person

8:Ensure you have the permission of those you are filming

More Research.....

I watched a programme called videos that shapped the 80s. There were some very intesting music videos that i hadn't seen before and songs that i know of but haven't see the song visually. I decided to pick a top three out of the songs i saw here they are:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen are a massivly known band who had the advantage of having a front man like Freddie Murcuary. Their song Bohemian Rhapsody was quoted as the "1st exstravaganda that kickstarted music television". This song was amazing musicaly but also visually. The band were on tour and couldn't perform on Top Of The Pops and so they made a music video which suited the structure of the music.

2. Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles. Their lyrics to the song were not intentional at the time they were just fun lyrics however this music video was the first ever video to be shown on MTV and now the lyrics do actually have a sicnificance to how the music industry has changed.

3.The third music video i am going to mention is Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie the reason i have chosen this as one of my top videos out of the videos i sawis because it was the first music video to include daring imaginative ideas. the effects thats the directors used on the music video were very hard to create and all their ideas were challenged such as trying to make the sky look black. However they managed to pull it off and i think it is very intresting how images like that today are very easily created because othetechnology we are fortunate to have.

Filming...

Today my group worked with another group and we both filmed our lipsynching scenes. I helped out by doing lights, filming and positioning the "band members". We learnt alot from filming today especially when using lights. they have a bigger impact on the filming outlook itself. These two pictures are of chaise and Liam rehearsing and the location/background we featured in our filming.

Monday 8 November 2010

2nd day of filming ......

My group and another group have decided that we are going to both film tomorrow. We will both film our lip scynching band scenes using the same equpipment and helping give eachother ideas we will colabarate and use eachothers cameras for exmaple we have a scene when we film the band in a full shot but we also want to film the lip singers mouth singing using a close up we thought that is we use two cameras and shoot both things at the same time then it'll will liminate time. This will be really good for both of our groups as we can learn things of eachother and get alot more done together.

Ideas...

Today I was watching the 2009 film The Boat That Rocked today and came across a scene (taken from the image above) that had been edited to make the people on the boat appear by magic I thought looked really cleaver and spoke to my group about creating this effect in one of our scenes for our music video. We then came up with the idea of couples popping up everywhere around him which causes him to think he is going mad. We spoke about how we could create this effect and we mentioned shooting the couples in our location then doing a shot where no one is seen and edit it together whilst making it fast to make it look like they appear from nowhere. We really hope this will work but if not we have spoken about how we can work around it.

Planning update.....

At the moment we are creating and planning our storyboard, we have main ideas that we will use and a few ideas that we may include. During the making of our storyboard we have discussed different shots, editing effects and locations we can use. Our storyboard is coming along well and we are almost ready to upload it and put it onto our blogs.

Monday 1 November 2010

Rubix's Cube......

In todays lesson me and my group were creating our storyboard. During that we thought about the 80s theme and we discussed how we could include a rubix cube as a prop in our music video to make the audience fully aware we wanted to go with an 80s theme. However I then came up with an idea of using the rubix cube as a metaphor for how relationships go and how one person is always in control for example with a rubix cube we are in contorl of the way it moves which can link to mulipulation of a relationship , we also have to fix the rubix cube which relates to how things fall apart and someone is always left to put the pieces back together again in a relationship and rubix cubes are really fustrating which is also a very good link to relationships. I thought that using a rubix cube would also relate to the fact that relationships control out thoughts and that the colours on the rubix cube represent all the different things running through the mans head.

ANOTHER TASK.....

Another thing we wanted to try for our music video was a split screen showing the female the artist is singing about and also showing the bad performing. We tried something out and each of the boys lipscynched and then i randomly danced around to fill in for the girl who will be playing the love interest. When we really shoot this we would like to have the band playing their instruments to make the actors look a lot more like a believable band. When we watched back the split screen that we split into four we decided to change this and so when we actually film our music video we are going to have a full screen of the band playing their instruments and then a little box at the bottom of the female singing or dancing we think that will look better than what we originaly planed.

Here is the practise video:

Monday 18 October 2010

TASK....Planning

For our music video we would like a story bord included to set the story for the audience about what the artists are singing about however we think a storybord would set the story straight and a lot quicker and then gives us more freedom to explore new things throughout our video and would be a really good introduction to our music video. We had a look at what we could do on Imovie xpress and we couldn't do a traditional storybord but we managed to come up with something that would work and look good. Here is our video from our task :

Wednesday 13 October 2010

Planing again! :)

This is what we roughly drew to help us plan the week of filming. We went by this when filming however changed some ideas such as the rubix cube scene. Other wise this plan worked .

Practise task...Planning

Today we went into a spear classroom and shot a few clips. The whole point of this task was so we could edit on the Imacs and try out effects that we would like to include in our music video. we had shoots of the 3boys in our group lypsynching and then me dancing. This is because we want to include in our music video a split scene split into four different screens. These will include two band members beside the girl who the artist is singing about in the middle and then another band member on the other side.

We also wanted to make a storyboard for the introduction of our music video. we wanted something that tells the story but is also sweet and simple. Using this idea we shot a few clips of us as agroup arguing and talking just so we can use the footage and experiment with the special editing effects on the edditing programme we use. We found out that this can be succsessful , it will look slightly different from what we planned but we could still use it and make it work.

We will post footage of these tasks on our blogs soon.

Tuesday 12 October 2010

Planning.... costume & Location ideas......

As a group we discussed our ideas of costume and locations that we could use in our music video, Using the ideas we came up with I created a collarge <.

The Original bad members of 'The colours' are the picture in the left hand corner. As you can see their style is very retro and kind of 80s based and so we decided to go with this kind of theame for our costume. We also want to funk the costume up a little and add alot of colour which fits in with the bands name but also relates to the 80s and retro style.

Underneath the picture of 'The Colours' is a picture of the girl band 'The Saturdays'. The reason i added them to my collarge is because i like the costume they wear in their music video 'UP'. It matches the idea we as a group spoke about and it is very simple. The bright tights are something that we considered for any girls in out music video so we can stick to the idea of using alot of colours. We also thought of puffy dresses or skirts even to keep the 80s retro look.

Then we spoke about different locations that we can consider using. Ones that came up mainly were recording studio, a house and some where in London. We also thought of maybe showing a rehursle which is why on the collarge we added a school stage. An earlier idea was that the artists could be singing about two school teenagers which is where the libary lication came in handy.

We are still waiting to meet to discuss final options.

Monday 11 October 2010

Planning update.....

Today we spoke about filming a scene between liam and chaise and then editing the scene onto the Imac. The whole point of this was because we want a story board effect for the introduction of our music video to set the story to the audience without going into too much detail that isn't needed. This helps us limit what we show so we can focus on what really matters. Also the main aim of this task was to help up be creative with the editing programme we use and to explore whether we can make a story board or not so when it comes down to the actual filming will know whether we will need more footage or whether we can work around what we originally planned.

Random post ....

Today i came across this music video (Double vision by 30H!3) I thought it was really stylised and carefully thought about before it was filmed. This video includes so many different effects one main one being a computer effect. The video is designed to look like a computer desk top and the idea of somebody being in control of the clips we see. They have also made great use of a green screen for things such as the singer diving in the crowd. This video works and is really different and makes us want to watch more of.

Friday 1 October 2010

Watching 100 greatest music videos

In todays lesson we watched a little bit of 100 greatest music videos taken from channel 4. It is a good programme that explores the intreting elements of the most well known music videos. The progrmme showed documentry style music videos and videos that raise serious issues in which people can realate to as well as special effects, computer graphics and including famous actors to perform in artists music videos.

Ones that stuck out to me were :

Bronski Beat- Smalltown Boy (I like the idea on making a music video raising issues in a documentry style. It hepls an audience feel safe and ok to be who they really are. Music should be about sending out a positive message)

Cornershop Brimful of Asha includes some really good ideas and special effects such as having the band members
on the cd sleve that come to life. The setting is very colourful and appealing.

Elton Johns song 'I want Love' was cleaverly done as Elton decided he didn't want to be in his own music video himself therefore he hiered a famous actor Robert Downey Jounier to lipscych along to his voice but also as an actor her knew that Robert Downey could portray the emotion felt in the lyrics to the audience. This created a new effect and worked fantasticly as we assume that this song is coming from the actor!.
Here is the music video for 'I want love'

The Pet Shop Boys' version of Go West which was orrigionaly sung by The Village People. The duet realeased this song in 1993 and wanted to create a new image for their music video with the use of computergraphics. A critic commented on the programmed and said that videos are now the "Best and possible only form of art". The video is bery colourful includes alot if artisitic graphical features which is much more appealing than most modern day music videos.

Lip synching practise excersise......

This is me loading our final editted lipsynching excersise onto Imovie express , we then uploaded it to you tube. The reason for this excersise was to practise editting music intime to lips synching. It was a great chance for us to use the new programme we now have as the editing programe we have now is different from the progamme we previously used. Also this excerise was a great chance to see how we are going to need our actors to pull of the lipsyncing. Chaise really looked like he was singing the song which he was as we had the track playing while he sung and then we muted it on the imac , however it was alittle out of time because he was putting more effort into his movement. We learnt that it is better to have the music playing and to actually sing along to the song as well as putting movement and emotion in to the song as it looks much more realistic than it would if we didnt play the music and someone was just miming words they learnt. Using the new programme was tricky but we learnt the simple steps of edditing which is vital and also we as a group found out how to create a split scene which is demonstrated in our video.

Here is the lipsyncing excersise:

About The coulours.... our final chosen artists

The colours are a three man band. Who come under the pop, dance and alternative genres. On the unsigned website they are compared to early 'Wham' a well known band who were mainly known by our youth for the famous song ' Wake me up before you go go' . This boy band includes three very talented musicians as the each do more than one thing to make their music sound more exciting.

Band Member & Rolls :
  • Tom Pickford- vocals ,keys & guitar
  • Tom Newman - Bass, Synthesizers & Backing vocals
  • Tony Folland - Drums, Sequencing & Percussion
The band are currently recording their album that is due for release next year and are on tour around the UK at the moment. The band had some help with a really good producer who has worked with the Kaiser Chiefs and Pigeon Detectives who are well known at the moment. The Kaiser Cheifs are mainly known for their song 'I predict a riot'. On unsigned.com it says that The coulours like to write about real life situations and they aren't always happy ones however their melodies contradict that as they are upbeat and fun.

As The Colours were compared to Wham i decided to look at one of their famous music videos 'Wake me up before you go go'. The reason i decided to look at this music video is because of the bright colours and funness of the video. I really like these ideas and think they could work well in our video if they were to fit. Their style of costume is also very retro and 8Os looking which is good for more music video as we would like to maybe incorporate some bright 8Os style images.

I also think they are quite like a modern day band called The Wombats. They are a indie pop band who have the same kind of image as The Colours and also have a very familiar sound to their music. Here is one of their music videos and songs:

I think we could maybe try and go for an image just like these band members as they are pretty familiar to The Colours. I also like the idea that their music videos are fun and random and creative yet still make sense. Maybe we could try something like this.

The prosess of finding our final artist....

For our project we have decided to use the song 'Tonight i let you go' by The Colours. We found this band by searching for artists on www.unsigned.com. We each came across various artists of different type of genres such as Amber Rubarth, we then after a discusion decided to use The colours because they are really funky and energetic and help us think of the type of audience we could attract to our music video. We mentioned it being suitable for teenagers into indie and pop. James then emailed them and asked for permission to use this single and they kindly agreed.

Here is a coppy of the email we sent:

Hello i am a student in year 13 from Robert Clack School. I am working on a media project to produce a music video for an unsigned song. I found your song 'tonight i let you go' and thought it would be perfect to use for me and my group. Could you please send me an mp3 version of the song and the lyrics if possible, reply as soon as you can please thank you for your time :)

Here is a copy of their reply:
Hi James,
Thanks for getting in touch.
We're glad you like the song.
I've attached an mp3 and the lyrics are below. Let me know fi you need anything else. Please don't upload to any websites before we approve the video but I look forward to seeing the results.

Here are the lyrics of their song:

Tonight I Let You Go
You're empty promises still filling up my mind while my love's away,
Temptation calls me to this.
And loveless fools believe, their guilty hearts still bleed,
but their cold and lifeless heartbeats wear them out.
Cos you're the heartbreak that I couldn't deal with
You're the mistake that no-one could save me from
I know I'm better off leaving now, you are the only reason I wanted more.
You know I wasn't on my own tonight - I just keep on running
You know I wasn't on my own tonight - Tonight I let you go
My insecurities playing on my mind, problems never change,
you should come back, come back, come back and hope for more, wo
A love that runs too deep, stolen moments we couldn't keep
You should go before the night time lets you down
Cos you're the heartbreak that I couldn't deal with
You're the mistake that no-one could save me from
I know I'm better off leaving now, you are the only reason I wanted more.
You know I wasn't on my own tonight - I just keep on running
You know I wasn't on my own tonight - Tonight I let you go

analysing continued......Mise en scene

During this video the mise en scene clearly seperates the two different types of girls through the use of costumes, for example the "geeky" girl is completly different by the way she desses and hhow she presents her physicality .She wears a shirt and jumper and has her hair all tied up and looks like she belongs in a working environment she also doesn't wear much make up , However the other girl is in a blue dress that looks like something you would wear for a party and not school , she has alot of make up on and her physicality in the way that she walks gives us the impression that she is confident and in control. She is also taller which shows us she thinks everyone should look up to her. We get the impression that she is a bully as she is cruel to the other girl, She also pushes a boy against the wall with his broken arm which shows us shes dangerous and kisses somebody elses boyfriend infront of the girlfriend. At the end of the song the band enter the school with the lead singer at the front of the boys, the lead singer is almost saying somebody has to put you in your place. She then wipes off all the girls make up and takes out fillets from the girls bra. The use of the face wipe , Make up and filits is to represent how fakeness is a mask behind reality and that there is always somebody to put you in your place.
The lead singer in this music video brings back a sense of girl power and represents fistey girls by the way she characterises herself through this image.

Analysing continued... Cinematography

One of the features in this music video is that the editing is made in time with the beat. The shots are really fast and continuous. There are a load of close ups of the lead singer who shows emotion in the way she sings which matches the lyrics really well. The video is very illustrative and the audiance can easily pick out the message of this video. the types of shot such as long shots and mid shots are very effective especially when the lead singer is talking about the stereotyped tarty girl who is very into men and seems to take from other girls. There is also an over the shoulder shot when the sterotyped tarty girl tapps the stereotyped geeky girl on the back this illistrates the dominace she has. Also when there are clips of the band themselves performing the colour changes from bright to black and white at times, Also it includes a quick flash light which emphasises the quickness of the shots and beats of the music.

Analysis of a music vedio made by students....

We watched some students music videos they had produced . They were from other schools and we made notes on what we think made those videos successful as they were both 100% grades.

The first video we looked at was a song made by a band called 6underground. This video was successful because the editing fitted the beat of the music, it was fluid and quick. The camera work was really good. They had thought clearly about location and Mise En Scene. Also the main person who was lip syncing had a believable performance.

We then watched another music video that was alot different to the previous one. The reason this second one was effective was because the location fitted in with the music for example it was full of green and animals and the song was farm type. The mise en scene again also worked well as they had a guitar and tractor which fitted in with the farm type folk feeling. The editing was alot slower than the previous music video we saw and worked really well.

LAST WORD...

There has been a massive switch in the importance of Youtube from tellyvision channels such as MTV. Most vewing of videos appear to no be online or through VMA awards on tellyvision. But... there is still a battle between telly channels and Yutube.

How might we measure the access criteria of a music promo video?

We can keep up to date with how well a music promotion video is doing though many ways such as:

  1. How many views a video has on You Tube.
  2. Through music channel requests
  3. By sales such as CDs and charts.
  4. By the word of mouth
  5. Newspaper articles/ TV results
  6. How many times a video is shown on television
  7. Amount of publicity it gets
  8. And finally Illegal/Legal downloads

'Once in a lifetime - Talking Heads

During a session we looked at the famous music video 'Once in a lifetime' by the talking heads. we then took notes and this is what I learnt.

What is the purpose of this music video?

  • To promote the song- in their music video they purposley had the singer dance crazy because when you think of the song you think of the lead singers crazy dancing.
  • The video is sopssed to be confusing to keep the audience intrested.

Why is it a successful music video?

  • Word of mouth
  • Creativity
  • Meladramatic lypsyncing
  • Editing is random and matches the weirdness of the music video
  • Image

Purpose & success criteria

What is the purpose of a music promotion video?

Advertisment-sells-raises profile

Draws attention to music/song

Illustrates the song- paints a picture to a visual audience and tells us a story

Expersses an individuals emotions

Markets an image- people become intrested in the image for both negative and positive reasons (" bad press is good press") this means people will still pay attertion to the artist/song so it is still getting publicity.

Promotes artist/singer/album

Some make an artistic statement just like 'once in a lifetime' but Talking heads.

Article research

We looked at an article called 'How video didn't kill the radio star' by Stephen Hill. This article was released in a media magazine during February 2009.
A quote from the article is

  • "Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (1975) is regularly cited as definitive of some new era in popular music video is that it exemplifies the grammar of a music video." - This quote is referring to the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody includes many conventions of a music video.

  • Also looking at this article we found out that the key features of the popular queen music video 'Bohemian Rhapsody' were that the moving images were synced in time with the music. Also there are features of Sergei Eistein included in this music video such as montage cinema.

  • "The reason that 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is so revered is that the visuals are structured so exactly arounf the arrangement of the song." - The structure and arrangement matches the song.

  • Also the article included onformattion on youth and how conventions have changed in music videos through things such as fashion. It also mentioned how todays society allows us to be aware of music videos through the use of internet. Some artists are discovered from you tube itself! and with the accsess of you tube we are able to cone accross them and if we like them we have a choice of sending a link to people online and then it continues to get passed on. As an auidence we are allowed to have more involvement in the songs we like for example on you tube there are karaoke versions of music which is an advantage for the artist as the auidence are learning their songs and also it is fun for us as an audience.

Looking at Brandon Dikerson......

"Brandon Dickerson is an award-winning American music video, documentary film, and television commercial director who has also moved into directing theatrical films. He is currently signed with kaboom productions for commercials and boom music videos for music videos1".

Brandon Dikerson has worked with many American artists such as Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez who people may recognise as actresses from the Disney channel.
He isn't a well known director however his music vedios such as the Switchfoot video for awakening i posted on my blog are really creative and effective.

Random post

The reason i have posted this music video is because i like the creativity and the idea of having McFly singing as these plastic toys and moving drawing instrucions. I like the use of Toms legs at one point trying move his feet as it matches the lyrics "I've got to keep my feet on the ground". This video is different from the others i have posted but involves more annimation. The shot at the begining of the video is almost like a point of view shot. I am not sure but I think the directors idea of having the band as plastic toys is suggesting that as fans we expect artists to be plastic and all the same and just as something to entertain us . We dont always see that they are normal people.

This video has used editing very well. There are sentences shown on screen which are peoples thoughts. The idea is that we don't always say what we think or that we don't really know what people actually think about us. Mise en scene is used really well in this music video as it includes a bunch of pretty girls in the bands merchandise t-shirts which is maybe saying that they are really obsessed with All Time Low. Also there is a boy who is in a Fall Out Boy t-shirt which is relating to the fact people constantly compare you to other bands that are well known. A little bit of slow motion is used in this music video to make the playing of instruments look really cool. Humor is used a lot in this music video through the thoughts running through peoples minds. The shots included in this music video are shots such as point of view, long shots and close ups and panning.

What viewers want/ like

Viewers of music videos play a big part in how widely a music video, album or single itself is released. Now days because of artists like Laddy GaGa music videos are becoming popular for the obserdity that is included. Whenever Lady GaGa makes a new music video people all want to see what she is wearing and doing. All her videos are different to one and other and always have different outrageous costumes. Also the main conventions of music videos these days are attractive men/women. In most videos there is an attractive person that is very appealing to the viewers and so people tend to spread the name of the video or artist around. Certain dance routines also help music videos as it is a main hook for the viewers for example Thriller , Single ladies and cha cha side, all in which have a dance routine that people may know off by heart

This music video is one of my favourites and was directed by Brandon Dikinson the video was funded out of the bands OWN budget!. The video has different elements to it for example the video is in style of a documentry of peoples lives yet it also includes live action from Switchfoot. Stright cuts are used throughout as well as the obvious close ups. The lighting when the band are seen playing enhances what is going on. also there is some annimation style added into it, I think this music video has been really well editied to make it look cool and eye catching, The idea of how people want to live their lives to how they are living is easy to relate to and this idea has fitted in well with the video. It is a fun video and not so serious which is a good convention of a well liked pop video.

This song is the soundtrack to the new version of the film Alice in wonderland. I like this video as they show parts of the actual film itself and have edited it to make it look like Avril herself is in the film. The ideas are really creative too.Slow motion, black outs and dissolves are used in this music video and also a few little jump cuts at the end. What makes this music video successful are the same features as any other soundtrack for films. The artist is well known and her fans will hear the track and then spread it around. Also the music video promotes both Avril Lavigne's new album and the film Alice in Wonderland. People who see this music video will then want to go and see the film.

This music video also has alot of creative ideas. There are a number of different shots included and the camera seems hand held at one point. Also there is alot of editing for example when Ashlee Simpson is sitting on a rubix cube and when the statue of the head is singing. The conventions are appealing to young teenagers who feel like they have had enough and so the ideas of the crazyness symbolises how she her self feels and this is shown through mise en scene ( the straight jacket) and her body language and also the editing.

The history of Pop music

What is a music video? : Internet research

A modern day music video is used as a marketing device that promotes the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos go back much further they came into their own in the 1980s. This was when MTV based their format around the medium and they then later on launched VH1.
The term "music video" first become popular in the early 1980s. They were labeled in various terms including "filmed insert", "Promotional (promo film)", "Promotional (promo) clip"or "film clip".
(This information was from (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_video)

My own knowledge:
A music video is a way for the audience to visualise the song they like and also visualise the artist or artists who perform the song. Its a good way to make an appealing record to a wider audience and to promote their product so many people will become aware of it. Music videos have changed a lot over the years and things such as mise en scene plays a big part on how we view big named starts today for example Lady GaGa, everybody watches her videos to see what crazy theme she includes and what crazy costume she wears.

Brief & Introduction

For my A2 Media Studies coursework I am to produce a pop music video. This is completely different to our task before hand which was to produce a thriller. I will learn new skills and the challenge will be harder. I will have to research the history of music videos and look into different types of music videos and what makes them so good as well as looking at key features to music videos like lip syncing for example. My music video is to last around 3 and half minutes.
